Why do artists obscure imagery in art, and when is the opposite— directness— needed?

Some of my favorite artwork is the kind that’s made for newspapers and magazines. Or the kind that’s lifted up on posters held by protesters (it’s the concise messaging for me, not just the social justice context.) I like art that lives in familiar, accessible places, especially when it’s not made for commercial interests, and I like when art serves a purpose, no matter who makes it, because i love when art is a part of everyday lives.
