Heading Somewhere. 2018 - 2019.

Where are people headed, and why are they going there? Are they running from something or towards something? How can I depict a landscape surrounding them? What would they face? Where did the love live?

I made these paintings as I thought about people moving across oceans and borders, not just in recent years, but also historically. I thought about my family’s roots in Mexico and the Southwest. I read as much as I could about the African-American experience. And I thought about the land itself: it sustained the people and trapped them, gave them stability and moved beneath their feet.

These are acrylic paintings on birch wood panel with scratched and incised surfaces.
